Reaching New Lows

I weighed in this morning at 268 lbs. This represents the lowest weight that I've been at in 8 years. About 5 years ago I had gotten down to the low 270's but I put all the weight back on after I got into a mountain bike accident and broke my collar bone.

For months I've been lamenting the fact that the people that I work with haven't commented on the weight that I've been losing. Sure, friends and family have noticed and said things, but how much weight do you have to lose before your co-workers notice? I guess the answer is 60 lbs. In the last couple of days I've had at least 3 people mention that I look like I'm losing weight.

Good! 'Makes you feel better to know that people DO notice, huh. I think it just takes time for changes to register w/people. Like if you make a drastice change (like getting long hair cut to short, or shave off your beard) it's usually a week or two before someone says, "Something looks different - did you cut your hair?"

Also, weight can be a sensitive thing for some people. Like maybe they're afraid to say something b/c they're afraid that it might imply that they thought you needed to lose weight.

On the other hand, in our culture, some people think that weight loss is the ultimate complement, not matter how much you weigh! When my husband left and people tried to make me 'feel better' (I guess) they told me how good I looked and that they'd noticed that I'd lost weight. That was pretty funny, because I'd only weighed around a 117 during most of my marriage, and probably gained a good 10 lbs during the first year after he left!

Bottom line: I guess the real issue is how we feel about ourselves (and our health). I think you've scored on both counts, there! (But it's still nice to have people notice.)
